Type: Natural wetland; plays a key hydrloic, biologic and ecologic role in the region and is a rare instance in its geographic region. Condition: Currently dry; formerly a diverse complex of freshwater and salt marshes. Existed for: 10 million years. Area: 472 square kilometers (47,200 acres). Elevation: 1479 meters above sea level. Drainage Basin Area: 41,503 square kilmters. Gavkhouni Wetland was registered in Ramsar Convention in 1975.
Endeavors for Gavkhouni Wetland
Zayanderoud River and Gavkhouni Wetland running dry is one of the most important ecologcal crises in Iran, which not only is considered as a serious threat to Isfahan province, but also, as a dry salt marsh, Gavkhouni becomes a dust hospot which threatens ecosystem up to 100 km radius. Therefore, Women Society Against Environmental Pollution of Isfahan (WSAEPISF), since its first year of activity (2000), has put all its efforts in keeping Zayanderoud River healthy and alive from source to sink, including: – Celebrating World Wetlands Day – Celebrating Zayanderoud Day – Holding workshops on Zayanderoud – Supporting the conducting of interactive common conversation theater between Isfahan and Chaharmahale Bakhtiyari – Holding “Saving the Wetland” advisory meetings with locals – Cooperation in organizing the river bed for Thanksgiving for Water Reaching the Wetland Ceremony – Screening the movie “Zenderoud, a Special Day” – Preparing brochures, magazines, etc. about of Zayanderoud River and Gavkhouni
